The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
