Each time a significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
